Nikos Houliaras : The Back Rooms of the Mind

2012

A Nikos Houliaras retrospective, which gathers together for the first time all aspects of his oeuvre, with an emphasis on his visual arts output.
Nikos Houliaras was born in Ioannina in 1940. His use of an intensely personal expressionist style renders his painting deeply internal introverted, but his renown and reputation has spread worldwide.
However, Nikos Houliara’s career doesn’t only concern his visual arts creations. He is also one of the major poets and literary authors in the modern history of Greece, and his literary works have been translated into other languages.
Furthermore, he is one of the foremost lyricists and composers of the past few decades, as well as an interpreter of most of his songs.
He has also designed a large number of publications and has twice been won awards at the Leipzig International Book Fair for best book design from all over the world.

DINO VALLS

2011

Frissiras Museum presents a retrospective exhibition of 40 works by the contemporary Spanish painter Dino Valls entitled “Dino Valls: A journey through Spanish magic realism”. Dino Valls' painting is primarily characterized by the way in which he manages to manipulate the concept of time, whether it is historical (real) or fictional, contributing in the deeply personal character of his work. Nevertheless, what trully captivates the viewer is his gripping realism whose disturbing veracity transcends the limits of reality and ends up utterly fictitious. Astonishingly, this is a painting entirely made in the studio, full of riddles and symbols, an intellectual in vivo achievement that avoids inspiration from reality, it does not emerge from its close observation. Surely, Dino Valls is deeply interested in depicting the psychological state of his subjects, however in order to realize that he makes use an exhaustively detailed, almost anatomic, depiction of human body, looking back at Flemish painting which he manages to reinterpret in a deeply personal way.

Lost in Athens

2012

Lost in Athens
Athens 2012, a hydrocephalus metropolis seeking its origin and identity within the undisciplined conditions of rapid change. New residents flock within the city as former residents abandon it. New values replace the existing; social and moral barriers of a structured society are substituted by primitive behavior.

Liberated, antisocial behavior is frequently dismissed as some form of “social conflict” or as a current and transient issue.
Suddenly everyone strives for a share of the primitive. Daily changes are rapid and cataclysmic; so much as any Athenian corner is unrecognizable the very next day. A radiant city has been disguised into a vague Gotham city, a terra incognita for its residents. Is this everywhere? No!

A small village is resistant. It redefines its cultural values, replacing the depreciated urban slogans with new messages and absolute practices. In the heart of the city center of Athens, 19 artists stand before a new reality with cutting humor and insight, commenting on the social paradox of being “lost in Athens”, lost within our own city.
